Martha Rosina Hemmings
Martha was born on January 31st, 1874.
Birth was registered between January and March 1874 in the St Georges in the East Registration District, London, England.
She was born on 31 January 1874 at 61 Star Street, St George's in the East, London to Joseph Hemmings who was born on 18 January 1846 at Tavern Row, Bromley, Poplar, London and died on 25 April 1892 in the Sick Asylum, Bromley by Bow, London. Her mother was Martha Sullivan who was born about 1847 in Whitechapel, London and died on 15 July 1880 at the London Hospital, Whitechapel, London.
Martha Rosina's mother died when her children were young. Martha Rosina together with her sisters, Maria (born in 1868) and Louisa (born on 6 July 1876) were sent to the Sisters of Providence School in Hampstead Green, London, which appears to be a Catholic boarding school. They were all baptised in the Church of England, although I suspect their mother's family were Catholic (the Sullivan's) and they arranged for them to be sent to this school.
Joseph Hemmings, one of her brothers (born 1871) was sent to St Mary's Orphanage, North Hyde House, Heston, Middlesex and James Hemmings, her other brother (b 1878) was brought up by his godparents in St George's in the East, London.
Joseph Hemmings married Martha Sullivan on 2 July 1866 at St James the Great, Bethnal Green, London.
1901 Census shows that she was 27 years of age, born in St Georges in the East and was living at 33 Cadiz Street, Stepney, London. This census shows her name as Margaret which was incorrect.
1911 Census shows that she was 36 years of age, born in Stepney, London and living at 32 Bohn Street, Stepney, Mile End Old Town, London.
