Joseph was born in 1780. Joseph's father was William Goody and his mother was Sarah Croply. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Mary, Sarah and Elizabeth. He was the youngest of the five children.

He was christened in St Margarets Church, Tilbury-Juxta-Clare, Essex on 16th July 1780.
